Before we speak of liberation or freedom, we need to discuss the basis of the Buddhist path, which is confusion. It is important to begin by considering the development of what in the Buddhist tradition is called “ego.” This may sound pejorative, but we do not have to be ashamed of what we are. Although our background may not be particularly enlightened, peaceful, or intelligent, it is good enough. We can work with it. It is like plowing a furrow and planting seeds. So we are not trying to get rid of the ego, but simply acknowledge it and see it as it is.
